UCLA student robbed at gunpoint by two men on Strathmore Drive

Two men robbed a UCLA student at gunpoint early Thursday on Strathmore Drive, taking a cell phone and money before driving away, university police said.

About 2:37 a.m. Thursday, the student was walking on Strathmore Drive near Levering Avenue when two men approached from behind and pushed the student to the ground, police said.

When the student sat up, one of the men took out a handgun and told the student to give him their cellphone and wallet, according to a UCPD statement. The men then took the student’s cell phone and money, and fled the area in a sedan and a van, police said.

The first man was described as black, about 20 to 25 years old, and 170 pounds with a dark complexion and medium build. He had a shaved head and no facial hair, and was wearing a navy blue sweater without a zipper, police said. The student described his car as an older model, a gold-colored four-door sedan from the late 1990s or 2000s.

The second man was described as black and about 20 to 25 years old with long hair. His van was described as a dirty older model, which could hold 10 to 12 passengers, with body damage.

No injuries were reported, and UCPD has not made any arrests in connection with the incident.

Police recommend that students walk and park in well-lit areas and not become distracted by music or cell phones.

When confronted by a robber, students should comply with the robber’s demands and obtain a detailed description of the robber, police said.

The armed robbery is currently under investigation. Anyone with information about the incident can call UCPD at (310) 825-1491.

  1. “Police recommend that students walk and park in well-lit areas…” lol, the entire area surrounding all of those apartments is poorly lit, smh. Don’t walk alone.

  2. In addition to students and faculty being more aware, the reality is that these kinds of violent acts will continue unless there are more steps taken by the University to make the campus safer. UCLA needs to install more and brighter lights, have more poles with panic buttons, install cameras everywhere on campus and with the help of LAPD, all around campus, as well as upping the night patrols. It is very fortunate no one was seriously injured.

    1. Oh baloney. UCLA is safe. Didn’t you hear about the recent “Under Protected, Over Policed” town hall meeting where they demanded the university police not carry any weapons, among other things? Because the university police have been beating too many black students, apparently. Here’s the link: http://165.227.25.233/2014/12/15/students-hold-town-hall-to-address-police-brutality-draft-demands/ Maybe your son or daughter was there.

But seriously, you think we need more cops out there trying to catch these robbers. That makes sense. The only problem is, haven’t you heard?—the cops aren’t allowed to stop black men anymore.

  3. Why am I not surprised that they were 2 black suspects with crappy cars and a gun? I don’t hear any caucasians or asians going around robbing people in Westwood area. I try to reserve my judgment but I’m all for UCPD in doing racial profiling up to a degree, especially since most of all these crimes are committed by certain races

  4. Why am I not surprised that they were 2 black suspects with crappy cars and a gun? I don’t hear any caucasians or asians going around robbing people in Westwood area. I understand they are probably from Venice or Culver City areas and as far down as Baldwin Park areas but I don’t mind more LAPD patrolling Westwood and stopping suspicious vehicles

  5. Don’t expect the Black Lives Matter crowd to be too concern about this, after all if those two suspects ran into police officers they’d go and defend them.
