Women’s basketball closes Tulane/DoubleTree Classic with mixed results

The Bruins split their two-game stand at the Tulane/DoubleTree Classic in New Orleans on Thursday and Friday.

UCLA (4-5) fell to the University of Miami (8-3) on Thursday 67-74, snapping a three-game win streak. However, the Bruins followed up with a win against Samford (5-6) on Friday, beating the Bulldogs 71-52.

Junior guard Nirra Fields led UCLA in scoring in both games, putting up 15 on Thursday and 21 on Friday. Freshman guard Jordin Canada returned from a back injury to a limited role and scored 12 points off the bench against Samford.

The Bruins struggled with their assist-to-turnover ratio – something coach Cori Close has pointed out as a focus for the team – against the Hurricanes. They turned the ball over 21 times while only recording six assists. However they improved against Samford, posting an 17-14 turnover-to-assist ratio on Friday.

The team also managed 18 steals against Samford, a season high.

The Bruins will head to Mansfield, Conn., next to take on the No. 2 Connecticut Huskies on Sunday at 2 p.m.
