ASUCLA Board of Directors recap – Dec. 5

Associated Students UCLA is a multimillion-dollar organization that provides student services and activities that the university does not fund. It oversees the Undergraduate Students Association Council, Graduate Students Association, Communications Board, campus services and enterprises.

Proposals

  • Board members discussed possibly working with the 20 Million Minds Foundation, an organization that provides online open-source textbooks. The arrangement would allow ASUCLA to print the textbooks for students and sell them at the UCLA Store.

Store

  • BearWear sales were up following UCLA football’s win over rival USC and the debut of Troy Aikman and Jackie Robinson apparel collections at the UCLA Store.
  • Staff members at the UCLA Computer Store will now be required to complete a technologist certification.
  • Chie Tamada, a fifth-year electrical engineering student, won the UCLA Store T-shirt contest. Shirts featuring her design will be released in January.

Food

  • Food sales were up in October and November, despite the low performances of Taco Bell, Curbside and Bruin Buzz on the A-level of Ackerman Union.

Projects

  • Food Trucks for Finals will take place on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday of finals week from 10:30 p.m. to 2 a.m. The location has yet to be finalized.
  • Beginning 10th week, the UCLA Student Union will open 24-hour study lounges.
  • The board discussed the progress of opening gender-neutral bathrooms on campus, their potential locations and increased signage for existing gender-neutral bathrooms.

Construction

  • The construction of Kikka Sushi on the A-level of Ackerman Union continues to be delayed because engineering plans had to be redrawn.

Appointments

  • In a 10-0 vote, undergraduate representative Jordan Wong was appointed chair of the Executive Committee, and graduate representative David Zeke was designated vice chair.
