UCLA men’s golf takes home fifth Gifford Collegiate championship

This week saw the Bruins compete in the Gifford Collegiate Championship, located in at CordeValle Country Club in San Martin, CA. The Bruins won this event with a final score of 15 under par (1050).

This best five-out-of-six score tournament saw the Bruins finish ahead of USC at 12 under, Stanford at one over, Texas at four over and Northwestern at six over.

This was the 23rd time the Bruins won or tied for first under eighth-year coach Derek Freeman, and the third time they have done so this year. Their other wins this year include the Husky Invitational and the Erin Hills Intercollegiate.

In addition to the team success they saw at the Gifford, the Bruins performed strongly on an individual level as well. Junior Jake Knapp finished second with a score of eight under (205), one stroke behind winner Dylan Wu (Northwestern). One stroke behind Knapp was junior Lorens Chan who finished at seven under par (206).

Other Bruin notable finishes included senior Preston Valder three over (216), senior Manav Shah five over (218), and freshman Brandon Mai six over (219).

The Bruins will see a quick return to action coming up on Nov. 10. They travel to El Paso Texas to play in the All-American Golf Classic.
