USAC recap – Oct. 28

The Undergraduate Students Association Council is the official student government representing the undergraduate student body at UCLA. Council meetings take place every week on Tuesdays at 7 p.m. in Kerckhoff 417 and are open to all students. Watch a live stream of the meeting on the USAC Live! YouTube channel.

Agenda

  • USAC councilmembers voted unanimously to ratify the Fall 2014 Special Election results.
  • Sofia Moreno Haq and Negeen Sadeghi-Movahed took their oaths to serve as general representative 2 and transfer student representative, respectively.
  • The council approved contingency programming allocations with a 10-0-2 vote.
  • USAC passed a resolution calling for students to learn more about Proposition 47 with a vote of 11-1-0. Financial Supports Commissioner Heather Rosen was the only councilmember to vote “no.”
  • The council unanimously approved Student Organizations Operational Fund allocations to a little more than 200 student groups. Groups received about $230 on average.
  • Council unanimously approved Associated Students UCLA, Board of Directors Programming Fund allocations, totaling about $69,000.

Special Presentations

  • Students for Justice in Palestine members presented about Palestinian Awareness Week, which will take place Nov. 3-7. They screened a video illustrating the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and described various events during the week.
  • A member of the Community Service Commission made a presentation about their upcoming Day of Service Nov. 8.

Officer Reports

  • USAC President Devin Murphy talked about his office’s work the past week trying to educate students about Proposition 47. He said his office is also working with the #SchoolsNotPrisons campaign.
  • External Vice President Conrad Contreras talked about the Middle Class Scholarship and its efficacy. He said he thinks the Universitiy of California should be trying to improve the scholarship program for students. He also said that the Student of Color Conference will be held Nov. 7 at UC Merced.
  • General Representative 1 Manjot Singh talked about Bruins Day Off, Chai Talks and his office’s advocacy for the development of a Sikh Studies class on campus.
  • Facilities Commissioner Carlos Quintanilla talked about developing events focused on water conservation and energy sustainability.
  • Student Wellness Commissioner Savannah Badalich encouraged councilmembers to attend the Carry That Weight event as part of the National Day of Action for sexual assault awareness taking place Oct. 30 at 11 a.m. in Bruin Plaza. She added that her office is hosting an event to educate students about domestic violence Nov. 1 at Drake Stadium.
