UC summit to examine role of technology in higher education

The University of California will brainstorm ways to integrate technology into higher education at its first technology summit in San Francisco on Friday.

“As new innovations are coming, it’s important to have a conversation with people inside and outside the University to talk about what they are doing with technology,” said UC spokeswoman Shelly Meron.

Along with more than 300 faculty and administrators from the UC, higher education experts and representatives of technology companies will take part in the UC eNGAGE summit to explore ways to improve higher education by using technology.

UC President Janet Napolitano will give the welcoming remarks at the one-day summit. Gary Small, a UCLA professor of psychiatry and biobehavioral sciences, will give the keynote address Friday morning on how technology affects one’s brain and learning ability.

Meron said the University hopes the summit will let individuals share how they have incorporated technology into their classes and research.

“It’s a chance for people on the front-line to exchange ideas,” Meron said.

Though the event will not be live streamed, the University hopes to post a video of the event later, Meron said.
