University police question man about rifle in Snapchat video

University police questioned and released a man Sunday after he sent a possibly threatening Snapchat video to members of the UCLA community.

In the video, he held what appeared to be an assault rifle in his lap, police said. The snap had the caption “is it real or not.”

When officers interviewed the man, who is not a UCLA student, at the UCPD station, he told police the video was meant to be private and was a joke.

Snapchat contacted UCPD about the video, UCPD spokeswoman Nancy Greenstein said in an email statement.

The man told police the gun was an airsoft rifle, and a friend brought the rifle to the station for examination, Greenstein said. The man was later released.
