USAC Election Board announces candidates for special election

Three students are running for the transfer representative position and two for the general representative 2 seat in this month’s undergraduate student government special election.

All students are running independent of slates, which are similar to political parties. This is the first time in recent history that no candidates for the Undergraduate Students Association Council have been affiliated with slates.

The USAC Election Board announced the five candidates Wednesday night in preparation for the Oct. 21 to Oct. 23 election.

The special election was called for in spring, after students passed a constitutional amendment to add a new transfer representative position to the ballot. The transfer representative will be a regular voting member of USAC and will aim to represent the interests of UCLA’s transfer students.

Michelle Balatbat, a fourth-year political science student, Negeen Sadeghi-Movahed, a fourth-year political science student, and Allan Kew, a third-year political science student, are running for the transfer representative position.

All three candidates for the position are transfer students.

Balatbat said she has not campaigned for any USAC slate except for changing her Facebook profile picture to support a Bruins United candidate in the spring elections. Sadeghi-Mohaved ran for the internal vice president seat with the LET’S ACT! slate in the spring election. Kew said he just entered UCLA this year and has no slate affiliations.

The two general representative 2 candidates are Youmun Alhlou, a fourth-year international development studies student, and Sofia Moreno Haq, a fifth-year gender studies student.

There are also two fee referendums and a constitutional amendment on the special election ballot.
