USAC recap – Oct. 7

The Undergraduate Students Association Council is the official student government of UCLA’s undergraduate students. Council meetings take place every week on Tuesdays at 7 p.m. in Kerckhoff 417 and are open to all students. Watch a live stream of the meeting on the USAC Live! YouTube channel.

Agenda

  • USAC approved contingency allocations with a 10-0-1 vote.
  • USAC voted 10-0-1 to allocate $5,000 from the USAC discretionary fund to help launch the All of Us campaign for mental health awareness and advocacy.
  • The council voted 10-1-0 to place the Bruin Diversity Referendum, which would raise student fees by $9.93 per quarter to fund campus diversity and retention programs, on the Oct. 21 to Oct. 23 special election ballot.
  • The council voted 10-0-1 to place a temporary vacancy constitutional amendment on the Oct. 21 to Oct. 23 special election ballot.

Special Presentations

  • Representatives from Chai Talks at UCLA gave a presentation about domestic violence awareness within the UCLA and South Asian communities.
  • USAC President Devin Murphy, Student Wellness Commissioner Savannah Badalich and members of their staffs presented to council about the All of Us mental health awareness and advocacy campaign. They highlighted the goals of the campaign, along with the various mental health resources on campus.
  • The writers of the proposed Bruin Diversity Referendum presented the goals of the referendum.

Officer Reports

  • USAC President Devin Murphy said he is against the proposed Big Blue Bus route changes and cost increases because he thinks they will negatively impact commuter students. Murphy also said that Mental Health Awareness week is under way and spoke about All of Us.
  • External Vice President Conrad Contreras said he met with Student Regent-designate Avi Oved last week about the University of California budget and ways to better help students afford higher education.
  • Academic Affairs Commissioner Allyson Bach said she met with members of the Bruin Resource Center to discuss creating a partnership with her office. She added that her office’s diversity requirement lobby corps is planning a dinner with faculty about the proposal.

  • The council appointed Natalie Kreeger, ­a third-year political science student, to the Faculty Executive Committee with a 10-0-1 vote.
  • The council appointed fourth-year business economics student Trent Kajikawa ­to the Faculty Executive Committee with a 10-0-1 vote.
  • The council appointed Maryam Nouh, a fourth-year human biology and society student, to the Committee on Undergraduate Admissions and Relations with Schools with a 10-0-1 vote.
  • The council appointed fourth-year psychology student Breigh Dang ­to the Committee on Undergraduate Admissions and Relations with Schools with a 10-0-1 vote.
  • The council appointed second-year undeclared student Matt Spotnitz to the­ Undergraduate Council with a 7-3-1 vote.
  • The council unanimously appointed Zoe Sheppard, a fourth-year political science student, ­to the Undergraduate Council.
  • The council appointed Amy Linehan ­to the Undergraduate Council with a 10-0-1 vote.
  • The council appointed third-year psychology student Meredith Duncan ­to the Undergraduate Council with a 10-0-1 vote.
  • The council appointed fourth-year communication studies student Francesca Rebosura ­to the Campus Programs Committee ­for a one-year term with a vote of 10-0-1.
  • The council unanimously appointed fourth-year Afro-American studies student Tanesha Walker ­to the Campus Programs Committee ­for a one-year term.
  • The council unanimously appointed third-year environmental studies and geography student Roxanne Vergara to the­ Campus Programs Committee ­for a one-year term.
  • The council unanimously appointed fourth-year environmental studies and political science student Logan Linnane ­as The Green Initiative Fund Student Representative ­for one year.
