LA STAGE Alliance Ovation award nominees include 12 UCLA faculty, alumni

Mon. Sept. 22, the 2013-2014 LA STAGE Alliance Ovation award nominees were announced. The finalists included 12 faculty and alumni from UCLA’s School of Theater, Film and Television.

The awards include categories in production, design and performance. TFT visiting associate professor Brian Kite was nominated for best director of a musical, “Les Miserables,” and professor Jose Luis Valenzuela, visiting associate professor Jessica Kubzansky and alumnus Tim Robbins were nominated for best director of a play for “Premeditation,” “Everything You Touch” and “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” respectively.

Alumnus Pablo Santiago was nominated for best lighting design and alumnus Doug Newell was nominated for sound design. Alumnus Spencer Lee was nominated for video/projection design and alumna Hana Kim received two nominations for video/projection design.

For original playwrighting, alumna Sheila Callaghan was nominated for “Everything You Touch,” while alumna Kelly Todd was nominated for choreography for “Lysistrata Jones.” Alumnae Shannon Holt and Anna Khaja were nominated for featured actress and lead actress, respectively, in “Passion Play” and “My Name Is Asher Lev.”

This year, the LA STAGE Alliance, a non-profit arts service organization, celebrates its 25th year of Ovation awards. In Los Angeles, the Ovation awards are the only peer-judged theater awards.

The ceremony will take place on Nov. 2 at the San Gabriel Mission Playhouse at 7 p.m.
