QB Jerry Neuheisel named Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week

Redshirt junior quarterback Brett Hundley, a Heisman candidate, hasn’t done it yet this season, but backup Jerry Neuheisel has.

On Monday, Neuheisel was named Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week.

After Hundley left Saturday’s UCLA-Texas game late in the first quarter with a left elbow injury, Neuheisel stepped in and engineered UCLA’s come-from-behind 20-17 win over Texas.

Neuheisel’s signature moment came with 3:00 left.

His team down four and junior wide receiver Jordan Payton running a double-move go route, Neuheisel first pump-faked to Payton and then lofted a picture-perfect pass to him for a 33-yard touchdown completion. That made it 20-17 UCLA and eventually served as the game-winning touchdown.

Neuheisel, a redshirt sophomore quarterback, finished 23 of 30, passing for 178 yards and two touchdowns.

More honors

The Bruins nabbed two out of three Pac-12 Player of the Week honors on Monday as junior cornerback Ishmael Adams was named the Pac-12 Special Teams Player of the Week.

Late in the fourth quarter, when UCLA needed it most, Adams returned a punt 45 yards downfield to set up UCLA’s offense at the Texas 33-yard line.

On the next play, with 3:00 min left, Neuheisel did the rest.
