The Undergraduate Students Association Council is the official student government of UCLA’s undergraduate students. During summer, council meetings take place biweekly on Tuesdays at 8 p.m. in Kerckhoff 417 and are open to all students. Watch a live stream of the meeting on the USAC Live! YouTube channel.
Agenda
- The council approved capital contingency programming allocations with a 7-0-0 vote.
- The council unanimously approved new bylaws outlining the responsibilities for a new transfer student representative position on council.
- The council unanimously voted to hold a joint special election in fall in response to General Representative 2 Nihal Satyadev’s resignation on June 12.
Special Presentations
- ARK Broadcasting representative Justin Boogaard spoke about developing its services to form a new social network for UCLA students. The group is privately testing a service where students can post text messages and pictures.
Appointments
- The council appointed Denea Joseph, a third-year political science student, to the University of California Student Association Board of Directors with a 6-0-1 vote.
- The council appointed Morris Sarafian, a second-year political science student, to the UCSA Board of Directors with a 6-0-1 vote.
Officer Reports
- USAC President Devin Murphy said UCLA Student Affairs is undergoing some internal organizational changes in the coming weeks. Murphy said there will be internship opportunities for all USAC executive offices in the fall and that he and other councilmembers will be promoting USAC during the new student orientations.
- Internal Vice President Avinoam Baral said that he and Student Wellness Commissioner Savannah Badalich are continuing their work to create a UCLA-specific safety app. Baral added that his office is considering ways to improve the quality of the live stream for USAC meetings.
- External Vice President Conrad Contreras said he spoke with Assistant Director for Residential Life Karen Hedges about creating an informative guide for students to institutionalize voter registration during True Bruin Welcome Week. Contreras said the UCSA Board of Directors retreat is from June 25 to 28.
- A proxy for Academic Affairs Commissioner Allyson Bach said she is reviewing applications for appointments in her office.
- A proxy for Facilities Commissioner Carlos Quintanilla said he and Badalich are meeting with the director of the UCLA Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Resource Center to further discuss gender inclusive bathrooms on campus. Quintanilla’s proxy said office members are going to work with the Team Green, a student resident education and leadership program focused on sustainability.
- A proxy for General Representative Manjot Singh gave an update about his office’s Cap and Gown Donation Drive earlier in June and said his office will continue collecting caps and gowns throughout the summer and school year.
- Student Wellness Commissioner Savannah Badalich said her office is donating $6,000 to the LGBT Resource Center for signage renovations, which would alter about 20 bathrooms. Badalich said she met with Pamela Thomason, Sexual Harassment and Title IX Officer, to talk about the composition and purpose of the UCLA sexual assault task force. Badalich said she and her office will reconvene in September to map out ideas for the task force.
