Men’s tennis’ Marcos Giron to compete for NCAA singles title

Perhaps UCLA men’s tennis’ Marcos Giron can still win an NCAA championship after all.

Six days after the Bruins’ loss in the team semifinals, the junior ensured a chance at the NCAA singles title with a 7-5, 6-3 win in the semifinals over Texas’ Soren Hess-Olesen (9-16 seed). Giron, the No. 2 seed in the tournament, will now face Pepperdine’s Alex Sarkissian in Monday’s final.

The odds of winning appear to be tipped in Giron’s favor. Sarkissian is unseeded, and ranked No. 28 in the latest ITA singles rankings. Giron, meanwhile, is the second ranked singles player in the nation. The two also faced off earlier this year, where Giron made quick work of Sarkissian, 6-2, 6-3 in UCLA’s Feb. 22 sweep of Pepperdine.
