10-mile stretch of carpool lane on 405 to open Friday

The 10-mile northbound carpool lane on the 405 freeway is set to open to drivers Friday, county officials said.

The carpool lane, the longest in the nation, will be opened in time for Memorial Day, according to a statement on Los Angeles County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky’s website.

The lane opening doesn’t spell the end of the project altogether; numerous smaller tasks, such as landscaping, remain,” the statement said. “But it marks a major moment of relief for construction-weary residents and motorists who have endured years of disruptions through the Sepulveda Pass.”

The carpool lane is a central component of the Sepulveda Pass Improvements Project, which also aims to reconstruct three bridges and widen the freeway. New ramps connecting the freeway to Wilshire Boulevard were completed in 2013 as part of the project.
