UCLA’s annual Bike Week offers pit stops for cyclists

UCLA Transportation’s annual Bike Week events will take place this week, in conjunction with Los Angeles Metro Transportation’s Bike Week and the UCLA Bicycle Coalition.

From Tuesday to Thursday, UCLA Transportation will offer a pit stop at different locations around Westwood in the morning for cyclists to get bike tune-ups from the UCLA Bike Shop, food and other free items.

On Tuesday, the pit stop will be from 8:30-10:30 a.m. at Westwood Boulevard and Le Conte Avenue. On Wednesday, it will be at the same time but at Gayley and Le Conte avenues, and on Thursday the pit stop will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Lu Valle Commons on campus.

The UCLA Bicycle Coalition has planned two bike trains – guided bicycle rides – around Los Angeles on Thursday morning, said Hyeran Lee, advocacy chair of the UCLA Bicycle Coalition and a graduate student in urban planning.

One train will meet at 7:30 a.m. at Wilshire Boulevard and Western Avenue in Koreatown, the other will meet at the Starbucks in Culver City on Washington Boulevard. Both will pass through the UCLA Bicycle Coalition’s pit stop at Westwood Boulevard and Le Conte Avenue around 9 a.m.

The Koreatown train is a regular event, and Lee said she hopes the Culver City train becomes a staple service in the fall.

Lee added that cyclists can participate in a letter-writing campaign with the UCLA Bicycle Coalition to Mayor Eric Garcetti on Thursday to express support for his Great Streets initiative. Cyclists can also learn bike safety information at the pit stop on Thursday, she said.
