Safe Sex Week to educate students through themed days, events

A series of on-campus events this week will aim to educate students about safe sex practices and sexual violence prevention through various informational
sessions.

Starting Monday, the Student Wellness Commission’s Gender Health committee will launch Safe Sex Week, which is meant to teach students about issues such as AIDS, sexually transmitted infections and sexual consent.

Students can attend informational fairs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Bruin Plaza on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, and at Bruin Walk on Tuesday.

Each day’s event will correspond to a different theme. Monday will focus on issues about consent, Tuesday will promote AIDS awareness, Wednesday will concentrate on sexually transmitted infections and Thursday’s theme will center on contraceptives and sex education. A truck offering free HIV testing will be available in Wilson Plaza on Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

In addition to the week’s informational sessions, students can attend a photo gallery titled Fight AIDS on Tuesday from 6-8 p.m. in the Bruin Reception Room in Ackerman Union.

The committee will also host a teach-in event called Queer Love is Safe Love with Kaya Masler, a feminist activist, on Wednesday from 8-9:30 p.m. in Humanities A68.
