A Los Angeles superior court judge rescheduled the pretrial hearing for former UCLA water polo player Hakop Kaplanyan, who is being charged with forcible rape.

At a pretrial hearing the district attorney and defense lawyer discuss the evidence of their case. The hearing was rescheduled Tuesday morning to allow more time for the prosecution to gather evidence.

Kaplanyan, 19, recently pled not guilty to three felony counts of forcible rape, one felony count each of false imprisonment by violence, possession of matter depicting a minor engaging in sexual conduct and a misdemeanor count of sexual battery by restraint.

If convicted of all charges, Kaplanyan could face up to 37 years in state prison.

Kaplanyan was suspended from UCLA last April, shortly after he was arrested on suspicion of raping a female student in a UCLA residential hall.

As of November, he was no longer enrolled at UCLA.

Correction: The hearing described in the article was a pretrial hearing, not a preliminary hearing.

  1. Daily Bruin, you might want to do a little research before you write short inaccurate “news” articles. This is basic stuff. Your previous article about this guy getting arrested referenced a Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office release. Had you actually read that release, you would have learned that he was indicted by a grand jury. Had you done a little research, you would have learned that there isn’t a preliminary hearing after a grand jury indictment. And what’s your source for the part about the prosecution needing more time to gather evidence? They already presented their case to the grand jury, didn’t they? So basically your article is four lines of old news and two lines of inaccurate news. What really happened?

  2. Hakop is a rapist and needs to be in jail for at least 35 years. He is a nasty ‘man’. Shame on those people who made a video supporting him because he has a ‘nice smile’. Those people who supported him are a strain to the progress of humanity.
