UCLA alumna Jana Johnson recently saved the Palos Verdes blue butterflies from extinction. She received her Ph.D. in biology from UCLA in 2008 and was immediately rewarded with an opportunity to make a difference by improving the environment. Housed at Moorpark College, Johnson’s research has annually facilitated the reproduction and release of thousands of butterflies into the wild. As the founder of The Butterfly Project, she takes pride in her work and shares it with her students at Moorpark College. She describes her relationship with the Palos Verdes blue butterflies as “passionate not only on a biological level, but also a personal, spiritual level.” Johnson explains their life cycle and talks about her journey in saving the butterfly species.
