College enrollment expected to increase at slower pace

College enrollment is expected to continue to increase until 2022, but at a slower pace than in the past couple decades, according to a National Center for Education Statistics report released last week.

From 2011 to 2022, enrollment in postsecondary institutions is expected to increase 14 percent to almost 24 million people. From 1997 to 2011, enrollment increased 45 percent.

Specifically for 18- to 24-year-olds, enrollment increased 49 percent from 1997 to 2011, but is expected to increase just 9 percent from 2011 to 2022.

Out of all races and ethnicities, Hispanic student enrollment increased the most between 2011 and 2022, by 27 percent, while black student enrollment increased by 26 percent.

The report takes into account expected increases in the college-age population, disposable income and unemployment rates, but does not take into account the cost of a college education, the economic value of a college degree or the impact of distance learning.
