USAC recap – Feb. 25

The Undergraduate Students Association Council is the official student government of UCLA’s undergraduate students. Council meetings are Tuesdays at 7 p.m. in Kerckhoff 417 and are open to all students.

Agenda

  • The council voted down a resolution calling for UCLA and the University of California to divest from five companies that profit from the Israeli occupation of Gaza and the West Bank.
  • The council meeting lasted 12 hours and included nine hours of public comments. About 500 students showed up to the meeting, which took place in Ackerman Grand Ballroom.
  • USAC approved contingency funding with an 11-0-1 vote.

Special Presentations

  • Bruins for Israel members presented to council about why they thought the proposed USAC divestment resolution was divisive and rooted in the larger Israeli-Palestinian conflict, including the global Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement.
  • Students for Justice in Palestine members presented to councilmembers in support of the divestment resolution. They said the resolution is solely about divestment and protecting human rights.

Officer Reports

  • USAC President John Joanino said students can now apply for the John H. Sarvey Leadership in Service Award and that his office is working on a BruinCard redesign competition.
  • External Vice President Maryssa Hall said she plans to attend a University of California Student Association board meeting this weekend.
  • Academic Affairs Commissioner Darren Ramalho said his office is organizing a series of workshops for transfer students.
  • Student Wellness Commissioner Savannah Badalich said that her office is working on an “alcohol is not consent” campaign as part of 7,000 in Solidarity, a campaign against sexual assault at UCLA. Badalich added that the 7,000 in Solidarity zine is expected to come out around the end of this quarter.
  • General Representative Sunny Singh said his office is hosting a “Governing Bodies Panel” for first-year and transfer students Thursday from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the Rieber Hall Fireside Lounge.
