Members of the Asian Pacific Islander communities at UCLA and USC are hosting a town hall Wednesday night in response to racist and sexist fliers that were recently sent to the UCLA Asian American Studies Center and the USC Asian Pacific American Students Services.
The event will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. in the basement of the Student Activities Center.
Two weeks ago, the UCLA Asian American Studies Center and the USC Asian Pacific American Student Services received anonymous fliers that contained racist and sexist slurs, which attacked multiple ethnic communities.
UCLA student groups who signed a letter written in response to the flier, including the Asian Pacific Coalition, Pacific Islands Students Association, Samahang Pilipino and the Vietnamese Student Union, claim that the fliers reflect larger problems with campus racial climate and Los Angeles culture, and that it was not an isolated incident.
At the town hall, members of UCLA cultural groups plan to present several demands for UCLA administrators to address the university’s campus climate, said Nicole Ngaosi, the academic affairs coordinator for the Asian Pacific Coalition.
The students hosting the event plan to ask UCLA administration to give more funding to support UCLA cultural groups and UCLA ethnic and gender studies departments and programs, said Ngaosi, a fourth-year Asian American studies student.
The students also plan to ask the university to create a diversity-related General Education requirement and include students in the selection process for UCLA’s new vice chancellor of equity, diversity and inclusion, Ngaosi said.
All students can attend the town hall.
