USAC Recap – Feb. 4

The Undergraduate Students Association Council is the official student government of UCLA’s undergraduate students. Council meetings are Tuesdays at 7 p.m. in Kerckhoff 417 and are open to all students.

Agenda

  • USAC approved contingency allocations with a 9-0-1 vote.

  • With an 8-0-2 vote, the council allocated $2,000 in discretionary funding to support a customized version of a smartphone safety application called Circle of 6. Internal Vice President Avi Oved and Student Wellness Commissioner Savannah Badalich abstained from voting.

  • The council voted unanimously to indefinitely postpone voting on whether to use discretionary funds to pay for a webcam for livestreaming USAC meetings.

  • The council unanimously passed a bylaw amendment that prevents future salary change decisions from taking effect until after a new council is elected.

  • The council unanimously passed a resolution calling for the University of California, UCLA and Associated Students UCLA to divest from companies that invest in private prisons.

Officer reports

  • USAC President John Joanino said his office has partnered with ASUCLA to help Philippine typhoon relief efforts. ASUCLA will donate 10 percent of student purchases until Sunday if customers present donation coupons. Joanino added that he and Community Service Commissioner Omar Arce will be launching the John Hoang Sarvey scholarship next month.

  • Oved said that he and the Campus Safety Alliance are in the process of programming Campus Safety Day to promote different safety resources. The event is set to take place March 3.

  • External Vice President Maryssa Hall said her office will be co-programming DiverseCity Tours events with the Cultural Affairs Commission this quarter.

  • Academic Affairs Commission Chief of Staff Heena Doshi said that the Academic Affairs Commission is hosting an academic resource fair Wednesday in Bruin Plaza from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

  • Badalich said the 7,000 in Solidarity campaign against sexual assault will help put on a men-as-survivors panel on Feb. 19, among other events this quarter.
