Man steals UCLA student’s cell phone in North Village

A man pushed a UCLA student and stole her cell phone while she was walking in the North Village Wednesday afternoon.

The student was heading south on Kelton Avenue near Ophir Drive at about 2:30 p.m. when the man pushed her from behind and grabbed her cell phone, according to a university police statement released Thursday. No injuries were reported.

The man then got in a gray SUV and drove north on Kelton Avenue, turning west on Gayley Avenue.

The man is described as black, 25 to 30 years old, 5-feet-6-inches to 5-feet-8-inches tall, and about 200 pounds. He was wearing a green cap, a gray sweater, blue jeans and possibly a red shirt.

Police recommend students be aware of their surroundings and avoid walking with a cell phone in their hand.

No further information was available. The case is still under investigation.
