USAC Recap – Jan. 28

The Undergraduate Students Association Council is the official student government of UCLA’s undergraduate students. Council meetings are Tuesdays at 7 p.m. in Kerckhoff 417 and are open to all students.

Agenda

  • USAC approved contingency allocations with a 7-0-1 vote.

Special presentations

  • Members of the UCLA Student Risk Education Committee presented to the council about the committee’s work, including offering educational training sessions, advice on the best practices in student risk education and working with multiple campus departments as a resource.

  • Students in Bruins for Israel presented to the council about the organization’s goals and what they think USAC can do to support Jewish students at UCLA.

Officer reports

  • USAC President John Joanino said he plans to send a letter with other University of California council presidents to UC President Janet Napolitano about next year’s academic calendar, including its shorter winter break. He said the letter will mainly address the lack of student input involved in the academic calendar scheduling decision. He also said his office is working on a BruinCard redesign competition.

  • Internal Vice President Avi Oved said his office submitted a bylaw amendment proposal to the Constitutional Review Committee, which approved the proposal Tuesday. The amendment prevents future councils from raising their own stipends. He also said he plans to apply for about $65 from the USAC discretionary fund to buy a webcam to livestream USAC meetings.

  • External Vice President Maryssa Hall said she plans to attend a University of California Student Association Board of Directors meeting this weekend. She also said she plans to bring a resolution to council next week calling for divestment from private prisons.

  • Academic Affairs Commissioner Darren Ramalho said his office is co-programming an event called Tackle Stress this Thursday in Bruin Plaza from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., where students will hand out free blue books and scantrons. Ramalho also said he plans to continue talks with administrators about a possible diversity requirement at UCLA.
