ASUCLA Board of Directors meeting recap: Jan. 24

Associated Students UCLA is a multimillion-dollar organization that provides student services and activities that the university does not fund and oversees the Undergraduate Students Association Council, Graduate Students Association, Communications Board, campus services and enterprises.

PROPOSALS

· The board passed the Finance Committee’s motion to create a program in which 10 percent of sales earned from customers with a special coupon will be donated to the UCLA Typhoon Haiyan Relief Committee. ASUCLA will donate up to $6,000.

· The board passed a motion to extend the deferment of payments by the Communications Board to ASUCLA until February.

STORE

· January sales are off to a slow start, said Bob Williams, executive director of ASUCLA.

· Textbook and computer sales remain low, which is consistent with what the entire market is seeing, said Rich Delia, chief financial officer of ASUCLA.

· The student store no longer uses plastic bags and now sells reusable bags for about $2.

· The alumni sale on Dec. 14 earned less than $30,000, which was less than what ASUCLA hoped it would make, Williams said. ASUCLA intends to collaborate better with the UCLA Alumni Association in the future, he added.

CONSTRUCTION

· Jamba Juice will be closed this week for a remodel.

· Wolfgang Puck Express has been approved to install patio heaters, which the restaurant will pay for.

· In order to make room for “The Black Experience” mural on the first floor of Ackerman Union, over winter break, Panda Express removed an express station that was butted up against the wall in front of the mural and scaled back its soffit, which had connected to that same wall. The restaurant also refurbished its exterior, which now includes a more modern version of its sign. The false wall in front of the mural was also removed, and the restoration of the mural is currently underway.

· ASUCLA installed doors during winter break in the back entrance to the Global Viewpoint Lounge on the A-level of Ackerman Union.

· The Campus Beautique, a sectioned-off area of the student store that sells beauty products, had a gray, plank-style floor installed over winter break.

FOOD

· In December, catering and concessions earned $25,000.

· Foot traffic has remained high on the first floor of Ackerman Union and low on the A-level.

· In December, LuValle Food Servery had the best month of the year.
