When it comes to sustainable buildings, “UC is definitely at the forefront,” says Jeff Averill, the UCLA campus architect. A 2009 UC policy requires all new construction and renovation on campus to comply with LEED Silver Standards. LEED, Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, rates buildings on their sustainability efforts and design. Features rated range from natural ventilation to low energy appliances to non-toxic paints. UCLA has 14 LEED certified buildings and over 20 in planning or construction.
