USAC Recap – Jan. 21

The Undergraduate Students Association Council is the official student government of UCLA’s undergraduate students. Council meetings are Tuesdays at 7 p.m. and are open to all students. This meeting was held in the Covel Commons South Bay room.

Agenda

  • The council approved contingency programming allocations with an 11-0-1 vote.

  • The council approved capital contingency allocations with a 12-0-0 vote.

Officer reports

  • USAC President John Joanino said a community forum will be held tomorrow by USAC, the On-Campus Housing Council, the Daily Bruin and other campus media outlets. He also said he is making preparations to fundraise money for the USAC endowment fund and centennial campaign.

  • Internal Vice President Avi Oved said his office has uploaded an updated “how-to guide” to the USAC website about how student groups can obtain USAC affiliated funding. Also, he said his office will be hosting a transfer resource fair this Thursday as part of Bruin Transfer Pride Week.

  • External Vice President Maryssa Hall said she plans to bring a resolution about Proposition 13 to council next week. She also said she is working with the On-Campus Housing Council and the Office of Residential Life to find a space where students can watch a streamed discussion between University of California President Janet Napolitano and students from different UC schools next week.

  • Academic Affairs Commissioner Darren Ramalho said his office will host an academic services exposition in several weeks. He added that he plans to meet with Hall and Joanino to discuss the diversity requirement.

  • Student Wellness Commissioner Savannah Badalich said her office will be hosting workshops tomorrow to teach students about ways they can help prevent suicides. She added that her office will host a Consent Week as part of the 7,000 in Solidarity campaign against sexual assault at UCLA next week.

Special presentations

  • Christina Tobin, founder and chair of Free & Equal – a nonprofit organization that promotes transparent elections – presented to the council about the United We Stand Festival, which will kick off at UCLA in May. Tobin said various performers and speakers will attend the politically themed music festival to advocate for the importance of free and equal elections.

Appointments

  • The council appointed Anthony Padilla, a third-year biochemistry student, as Election Board chair with a vote of 8-4-0. Oved, Campus Events Commissioner Jessica Kim, Financial Supports Commissioner Lauren Rogers and General Representative Sunny Singh voted against the appointment.
