GSA Recap – Jan. 22

The UCLA Graduate Students Association is the voice of graduate students on campus. The association meets for forum every three weeks and takes positions on current issues affecting graduate students. Forum meetings are at 7 p.m. in the Ackerman Viewpoint Lounge.

Officer Reports

  • GSA President Nicole Robinson said she talked to UCLA Chancellor Gene Block last fall about graduate student concerns and how to further improve the school’s support for graduate students. She also said she plans to meet with University of California President Janet Napolitano and bring up various issues graduate students have for discussion.

  • Nina Drucker, vice president of internal affairs, said she attended a John Wooden Center Board of Governors meeting, where members discussed facility improvements in the John Wooden Center and methods to improve sustainability on campus.

  • Cody Trojan, vice president of academic affairs, said he discussed the possibility of reversing some changes to UCLA’s leave of absence policy with Graduate Council chair Maite Zubiaurre. Trojan added that he thinks GSA should draft a resolution regarding racism on campus in response to a report released in fall that found UCLA’s policies for responding to incidents of racism on campus inadequate.

  • Hope McCoy, vice president of external affairs, said she attended the Student Advocates for Graduate Education meeting in fall, where participants discussed global education and various concerns that international students have. She added that she plans to lobby on behalf of the graduate students on issues such as student debt, taxation and research funding at the upcoming Student Advocates for Graduate Education meeting.

Special Presentations

  • Annie Maxfield, associate director for Graduate Student Relations and Services, discussed various ways the Career Center can help graduate students search for jobs. She said the Career Center can primarily help students with how to improve the presentation of their research statements, resumes and curriculum vitae.

  • Weiwei Wen, director of communication for GSA, presented the council’s plan to revamp the GSA website to make it more relevant to graduate students. She said GSA will hire a webmaster once she receives students’ feedback about how to improve the website.
