The new History Writing Center opened its doors on Monday to give some history students specialized help on research papers and developing their writing skills.
Currently, the center is only available to undergraduate students enrolled in History 96W, 97, 98T, 191 and 198C, which are the most writing intensive courses the History department offers, said Devon Van Dyne, one of three advanced doctoral students who tutor at the center.
Van Dyne said the History Writing Center aims to help students hone the writing skills that are critical for historical research papers, which upper division history courses often require. Van Dyne added that the discipline-specific experience the tutors have in writing similar papers is what sets the History Writing Center apart from other writing centers on campus.
The idea for a specific writing center for history courses began within the history department last spring and the planning involved multiple faculty members and professors, Van Dyne said.
Although the center currently only serves students from certain history courses, conversations about expansion have already begun and multiple professors have shown interest in having their courses be a part of the new writing center.
The History Writing Center is located in 2165 Bunche Hall and is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
