LA mayor begins partnership to increase city’s earthquake resilience

Los Angeles mayor Eric Garcetti’s administration recently announced plans to develop strategies for reducing earthquake-related damage in Los Angeles alongside a U.S. Geological Survey seismologist, Dr. Lucile Jones.

While working with Garcetti’s administration, Jones will consult with other technical experts to develop recommendations for addressing the city’s earthquake resilience strategies, according to a press release. She will also convene public meetings to hold discussions with property and business owners in preparation for any possible earthquake-related issues.

Among the principal issues to be addressed through the partnership are the state of the city’s water delivery and communications infrastructure and stability of private and government-owned buildings.

Jones said in the press release that her efforts to reduce the threats posed by earthquakes through the partnership represent the culmination of her research.
