Students and Westwood residents will soon be able to relax and float in simulated zero gravity chambers at an incoming Westwood business.

Float Lab, which allows customers to use their flotation chambers, recently began construction and is going to open in the coming months. This will be the second location for the business, which began in Venice Beach more than a decade ago.

The new facility, which sits next to the Corner Bakery Cafe at the intersection of Westwood Boulevard and Weyburn Avenue, will have 10 “flotation chambers” where participants can float on their own in a solution of water and dissolved Epsom salts.

Float Lab’s staff have not yet set an opening date, said director Crash Hoefler, the director of the company’s first location in Venice Beach.

A two-hour session at Venice Beach costs $40, according to Float Lab’s website. Participants must shower beforehand, and cannot wear anything in the chamber.

Hoefler said that the new location will differ from the Float Lab in Venice Beach because it will have wider, more modern flotation chambers – each about 5.5 feet wide instead of 4 feet. The chambers are 7 feet high, filled with about a foot of solution.

The new lab is another sign of new development along Westwood Boulevard, where a new Urban Outfitters is expected to open across the street in late 2014. In November, artisans set up temporary storefronts, including the future location of Float Lab, during Arts ReSTORE LA.

Hoefler said he hopes UCLA students can get involved with the Float Lab services once it opens.

“We’ll work with (UCLA students) to help as we set up, and set up programs for students,” he said. “We have to. We’re on your campus.”
