USAC Recap – Dec. 3

The Undergraduate Students Association Council is the official student government of UCLA’s undergraduate students. Council meetings are Tuesdays at 7 p.m. in Kerckhoff 417 and are open to all students.

Agenda

  • The council unanimously approved council contingency programming funds.
  • The council unanimously voted to not meet during finals week.
  • The council unanimously passed a resolution in support of educating individuals about their Title IX rights, reforming university sexual assault policies and improving resources for sexual assault survivors.

Officer Reports

  • USAC President John Joanino said that the majority of rooms in the Charles E. Young Research Library will be open 24 hours during 10th and finals weeks.
  • Internal Vice President Avi Oved said that the internal vice president’s office hosted its first town hall on Monday and that they can hopefully host more throughout the year.
  • External Vice President Maryssa Hall said that she plans to bring a resolution to the council during winter quarter asking the University of California and UCLA to divest from private prisons.
  • Academic Affairs Commissioner Darren Ramalho said that he plans to host more Stress Free Days next quarter. Ramalho added that he and other councilmembers are working to reach out to faculty members about the potential diversity General Education requirement at UCLA.
  • Student Wellness Commissioner Savannah Badalich said that 7,000 in Solidarity, a campaign against sexual assault at UCLA, is hosting an art gallery this week in the Kerckhoff Hall Art Gallery to educate students about sexual assault.

Special Presentations

  • Agatha Palma, a graduate student and a board member for the student group Students for Justice in Palestine, presented to the council the main goals of the Students for Justice in Palestine. Palma said that the group supports divestment from companies involved in what she called human rights abuses of Palestinians.
