USAC Recap – Nov. 26

The Undergraduate Students Association Council is the official student government of UCLA’s undergraduate students. Council meetings are Tuesdays at 7 p.m. in Kerckhoff 417 and are open to all students.

Agenda

  • The council approved contingency allocations with a 10-0-1 vote. USAC Facilities Commissioner Armen Hadjimanoukian abstained from voting.

  • The council unanimously voted to allocate $3,238 from its discretionary fund to pay for Financial Supports Commission textbook scholarships.

  • The council unanimously voted to amend its bylaws regarding the Student Group Outreach Committee. Following the bylaw change, specific representatives from different USAC offices, the Finance Committee and Student Organizations, Leadership and Engagement will sit on the committee.

Officer Reports

  • USAC President John Joanino said he presented to the Associated Students UCLA Board of Directors about matching donations students have raised for Typhoon Haiyan relief efforts. Joanino also said he and USAC Community Service Commissioner Omar Arce have now raised $15,000 for the John Sarvey Scholarship.

  • Internal Vice President Avi Oved said his office is holding a town hall from 6 to 8 p.m. on Dec. 2 in Kerckhoff 417 for students to propose amendments to the USAC bylaws. Oved also said that the Campus Safety Alliance had its first meeting last week and plans to meet again during the first week of winter quarter.

  • External Vice President Maryssa Hall said her office held a Week of Action last week, during which students called for more diversity in higher education and for higher education to be more affordable.

  • Academic Affairs Commissioner Darren Ramalho was not present at the meeting.

  • Student Wellness Commissioner Savannah Badalich said she is bringing a resolution to council next week that addresses the UCLA and University of California sexual assault policies and procedures. Badalich said she is trying to gather feedback from students about the resolution and sexual assault policies.

Special Presentations

  • Members of Bruin Alliance presented a letter asking USAC to defer councilmember stipend increases until next year and to amend USAC bylaws to prevent future councilmembers from raising their own stipends.

  • Finance Committee Chair Cynthia Jasso presented to the council about what the  Finance Committee has accomplished this past quarter, including revamping the auditing process for contingency programming funds, and what the committee plans to do in the future.

Appointments

  • The council unanimously appointed Becca Sadwick, a fourth-year political science student, to the Student Conduct Committee.

  • The council unanimously appointed Andrea Bari, a fourth-year Italian and film student, to the Student Conduct Committee.

  • The council unanimously appointed Michael Jimenez, a fourth-year political science student, to the Student Conduct Committee.

  • The council unanimously appointed Adam Friedman, a second-year economics student, to the Transportation Services Advisory Board.
