USAC Recap – Nov. 19

The Undergraduate Students Association Council is the official student government of UCLA’s undergraduate students. Council meetings are Tuesdays at 7 p.m. in Kerckhoff 417 and are open to all students.

Agenda

  • The council unanimously approved contingency funding allocations with an 11-0-1 vote. USAC Financial Supports Commissioner Lauren Rogers abstained from voting.

  • The council set week one of winter quarter as the deadline to make presentations about surplus funding requests.

Officer Reports

  • USAC President John Joanino said he will meet with members of Associated Students UCLA about the possibility of matching student donations to the Typhoon Haiyan relief effort.

  • Internal Vice President Avi Oved said that the first Campus Safety Alliance meeting of the year will take place Friday at 9 a.m. at the UCPD office.

  • External Vice President Maryssa Hall voiced support for the University of California union workers strike Wednesday. Hall encouraged councilmembers to show support for the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees 3299 union and the UC Student-Workers Union, United Auto Workers Local 2865.

  • Academic Affairs Commissioner Darren Ramalho said there is a “Counselor Connect” event Wednesday, during which academic counselors will be in Kerckhoff’s Charles E. Young Grand Salon to answer questions about academic requirements.

  • Student Wellness Commissioner Savannah Badalich said the state will review UCLA’s sexual assault policies and procedures to make sure they comply with Title IX.

  • Community Service Commissioner Omar Arce said his office is working with UCLA to purchase a live scan fingerprint scanner that would improve the safety of those participating in community service by checking participants for felonies. He added that Joanino secured another $5,000 to fund the John Hoang Sarvey scholarship for community service.

Appointments

  • Taylor Bazley, a fourth-year political science student, was unanimously appointed as USAC student advocate.
