Robin Anderson loses singles title to freshman top seed

Junior Robin Anderson’s second go-around at the USTA/ITA National
Indoor Intercollegiate Championships in 2012 couldn’t have gone any better. The junior finished in first place and took home the singles title last year.

This year, she wasn’t quite as fortunate. Anderson, the No. 2 seed in the tournament, fell 6-3, 6-2 in the singles final to top-seeded Jamie Loeb on Sunday. The event was held in Flushing, N.Y., at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, also home to the U.S. Open.

Coming into the final, Anderson had cruised through the tournament, winning each set in her four-match wins.

Yet Loeb, a freshman from North Carolina, was too much for Anderson, who was competing in her third straight USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships. Had Anderson been able to turn the match in her favor, she would have been the first repeat singles champion at the event since 2008.

Loeb, fresh on the scene of college women’s tennis, seems to have Anderson’s number. Loeb also swept Anderson in the singles final of the Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championships final earlier this season.

Sunday’s game marked the end of the fall season for Anderson and UCLA women’s tennis. Anderson closed the season with an 8-2 record.
