Women’s tennis players set to compete at USTA/ITA Southwest Regionals

Members of the UCLA women’s tennis team head south to San Diego today for the start of the USTA/ITA Southwest Regional Championships. The five-day competition will take place on the campuses of San Diego State and UC San Diego.

Six Bruins will be competing in the tournament, with four players – sophomore Catherine Harrison, junior Kaitlin Ray, junior Chanelle Van Nguyen and freshman Jennifer Brady – earning seeds. Senior Morgan Thomas and freshman Dominique Cetale will also be competing in the 128-player singles draw.

Those same six players will also be playing in the 64-team doubles draw, with the duos of Ray and Van Nguyen, Cetale and Thomas, and Brady and Harrison, who are seeded fourth and earned a first-round bye.

Brady will look to continue her hot play of late, as she enters today’s tournament having captured the doubles title at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships on Oct. 6 alongside junior Robin Anderson, the first time a UCLA doubles team has accomplished the feat.

Thomas and Cetale will face off against the Loyola Marymount University duo of sophomore Kristine Kouyoumjian and junior Lisa Piller. Meanwhile, Ray and Van Nguyen take on the winner of the match between Cal State Fullerton’s redshirt junior Megan Sandford and freshman Alexis Valenzuela and Pepperdine’s sophomore Michaela Capannolo and freshman Yuki Chiang.
