USAC Recap – Oct. 8

The Undergraduate Students Association Council is the official student government of UCLA’s undergraduate students. Council meetings are Tuesdays at 7 p.m. in Kerckhoff 417 and are open to all students.

Agenda

  • The council approved contingency programming allocations with a 9-0-3 vote. Financial Supports Commissioner Lauren Rogers, General Representative Lizzy Naameh and Internal Vice President Avi Oved abstained to avoid conflicts of interest.

  • By an 8-4-0 vote, the council passed a resolution expressing support of a campaign calling for the University of California and state leaders to invest more funds and resources in education, rather than in prisons. The campaign, called Invest in Graduations, Not Incarceration; Transform Education, is commonly known as IGNITE and was adopted by the University of California Student Association this year.

Officer Reports

  • USAC President John Joanino said he has been meeting with administrators to talk about changing the information included on BruinCards. He also said that he and other council members are meeting with University of California President Janet Napolitano Friday.

  • Internal Vice President Avi Oved said his office has finished its recent campaign to educate students about the USAC Student Organization Operational Fund, and that the number of student groups who applied for SOOF funding increased this year. He also said that members of his office are meeting with council members to discuss their quarterly expenses and compile a USAC-wide quarterly budget report.

  • External Vice President Maryssa Hall said that the University of California Student Association recently passed a resolution calling for more transparency and student representation in the appointment process of the UC President. She added that the website for the 2013 Student of Color Conference at UCLA is now live.

  • USAC Academic Affairs Commissioner Darren Ramalho said his office is co-programming a dinner with faculty and students to encourage discussions about the history of the diversity requirement in UCLA education. He also said that he is meeting with Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education Patricia Turner to talk about funding for the Undergraduate Writing Center.

Appointments

  • The council appointed Nicolas Valencia, a third-year economics student, to be the assistant budget review director with an 11-0-1 vote. Financial Supports Commissioner Lauren Rogers abstained from voting to avoid a conflict of interest.

  • The council unanimously appointed Dana Pede, a fourth-year applied mathematics student, to the USAC Undergraduate Council, the undergraduate body in the Academic Senate.
