USAC Recap – Sept. 17

The Undergraduate Students Association Council is the official student government of UCLA’s undergraduate students. Council meetings are Tuesdays at 7 p.m. in Kerckhoff 417 and are open to all students.

Agenda

  • The council approved contingency programming allocations with a 10-0-2 vote. Cultural Affairs Commissioner Jessica Trumble and Student Wellness Commissioner Savannah Badalich abstained from voting.

  • The council, with an 11-0-1 vote, allocated $1,500 from the USAC discretionary fund toward the 7,000 in Solidarity campaign against sexual assault. Badalich abstained from voting because her office, along with the USAC president’s office, are putting on the campaign. The money is planned to pay for promotional materials for the campaign, such as T-shirts, stickers and flyers. In past years, the discretionary fund has been underused.

  • The council discussed what stance it should take on the appointment of Janet Napolitano as University of California President and whether it should make a list of demands for her. However, the council did not reach a decision at the meeting on how it should move forward.

Appointments

  • The council unanimously appointed Allyson Bach, a third-year political science student, to the Faculty Executive Committee.

  • The council unanimously appointed Cynthia Wong, a third-year biochemistry student, to the Community Service Mini Fund Committee.

  • The council unanimously appointed Diem Le, a fourth-year human biology and society student, to the Community Service Mini Fund Committee.

Officer Reports

  • USAC President John Joanino showed the council the campaign video for 7,000 in Solidarity, a USAC campaign against sexual assault. He said he is also working on his next campus-wide email.

  • Internal Vice President Avi Oved said his office is currently compiling a guide about how to apply for USAC funding and how to register with USAC as a student organization.

  • External Vice President Maryssa Hall said her office is planning to help students register to vote. She added that she is working to organize a University of California Student Association campaign called Invest in Graduations, Not Incarceration, Transform Education, commonly known as IGNITE.

  • Academic Affairs Commissioner Darren Ramalho said his office will have a table at UCLA’s Major Blast event and will also be co-programming the USAC Diversity Dinner.
