UC Regents to vote on funding for new UCLA engineering building

The University of California Board of Regents is slated to meet Tuesday through Thursday this week for its bimonthly board meeting.

The board will vote Tuesday on whether to approve preliminary funding for an Engineering VI – Phase 2 building at UCLA.

The building, which would be built adjacent to an Engineering VI – Phase 1 building already under construction in Westwood Plaza, would provide research laboratories and offices for approximately 35 faculty members, an incubation laboratory and a learning center for students.

The total cost of the project is estimated at $70 million, but the regents have been asked to approve preliminary funding of about $3.15 million, to be financed by gift funds.

Regents this week are also set to decide on or discuss:

  • Preliminary funding of $620,000 for renovations and maintenance at the Blake House, the official residence of the UC president, which has been out of use for several years.
  • An update on the UC Promise for Education social fundraising program launch, a crowd funding effort to get additional scholarship funds for needy resident undergraduate students.
  • Approval of incentive compensations for the senior vice president of Health Sciences and Services as well as the associated chief investment officer at the UC Office of the President.
  • A revised long-term budget model and the 2014-2015 budget.
  • An update on the Working Smarter initiative, a UC efficiency initiative that aims to save $500 million in five years.

The last day of the board meeting, Thursday, will consist of a tour at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.
