The Undergraduate Students Association Council is the official student government of UCLA’s undergraduate students. Council meetings are Tuesdays at 7 p.m. in Kerckhoff 417 and are open to all students.

The council unanimously approved contingency programming allocations.

Campus Events Commissioner Jessica Kim and Cultural Affairs Commissioner Jessica Trumble presented to the council about Bruin Bash and the Enormous Activities Fair. Funding Bruin Bash is expected to cost more than $171,000 and the total amount USAC currently has to put toward the event is $119,000. The council allocated $40,000 to fund Bruin Bash and the Enormous Activities Fair with a 10-0-2 vote. Kim and Trumble abstained from voting.

Students who are organizing the University of California Student Association 25th annual Students of Color Conference presented to the council about the upcoming conference, which will be held at UCLA. The students asked for $40,000 to cover some of the costs of the putting on the conference, including paying for food, transportation and speakers. The largest cost of the conference is expected to be the cost of food for the conference’s participants. The council allocated $40,000 to fund the UCSA’s Students of Color Conference with a 12-0-0 vote.

A representative from Associated Students UCLA said the organization is planning to install television screens at multiple locations on campus and in Westwood. The television screens would feature videos that showcase student activities and student-created content.
Officer Reports

USAC President John Joanino said he and Community Service Commissioner Omar Arce went on CNN to talk about a recently passed USAC resolution that criticized the use of the word “illegal” to describe undocumented individuals. He said he is also in the process of developing a fundraising strategy for the John Hoang Sarvey Scholarship, formerly known as the USAC Community Service Scholarship.

Internal Vice President Avi Oved said he will be working with the Academic Affairs Commission to collect helpful informational materials for incoming transfer students.

External Vice President Maryssa Hall said the UCSA board rejected a proposal for a “vote of no confidence” for UC President Janet Napolitano at the recent UCSA monthly board meeting. Hall said she is planning to draft a USAC resolution that would express student concerns about Napolitano.

Academic Affairs Commissioner Darren Ramalho said he is planning on giving a presentation at Transfer Appreciation Day to help inform transfer students about enrollment issues at UCLA.

The council unanimously appointed Zoe Sheppard, a third-year international development studies student, to the USAC Faculty Executive Committee.

Jimmy Zheng, a second-year molecular, cell and developmental biology student, was unanimously appointed to the USAC Undergraduate Council.

Maryam Nouh, a third-year human biology and society student, was unanimously appointed to the USAC Committee on Undergraduate Admissions and Relations with Schools.
