USAC Recap – July 15

The Undergraduate Students Association Council is the official student government of UCLA’s undergraduate students. Council meetings are Tuesdays at 7 p.m. in Kerckhoff 417 and are open to all students.

Agenda

  • The council unanimously approved contingency allocations.

  • The council unanimously approved changes to the Student Organizations Operational Fund budget and assumptions.

  • The council unanimously voted to allow UCLA student groups to purchase tank tops and polo shirts, and be reimbursed by the Student Organizations Operational Fund.

Officer Reports

  • USAC President John Joanino said he is working to update and reformat USAC’s website. He said the project could possibly be completed in the next couple weeks.

  • Internal Vice President Avi Oved’s chief of staff, Nicole Vestal, said the office encourages all of council to get involved with UCLA Dashew Center for International Students and Scholars Global Siblings Program, which pairs one international student with a domestic student for a school year.

  • Maryssa Hall, USAC external vice president, said she is leaving Thursday to go to the 66th annual United States Student Association national congress in New Jersey. Hall also talked about the importance of the University of California Student Association Student of Color Conference, and said she wanted the entire council to be involved in the conference.

  • Darren Ramalho, USAC academic affairs commissioner, said his office is planning to develop a survey about online education, so administrators and student government can gauge how students feel about online education at UCLA.

Special Presentations

  • Conrad Contreras, a third-year human biology and society student, presented to the council about how the recent increase in student loan interest rates — from 3.4 percent to 6.8 percent — will affect UCLA’s affordability.

  • Representatives from the USAC steering committee gave the council an update on the 25th annual University of California Student Association Student of Color Conference. The conference will be held at UCLA this year and will take place from Nov. 15 to 17.

  • USAC administrative representatives Roy Champawat and Patty Zimmerman presented to the council about the possibility of raising USAC stipends, saying that low stipends may prevent equal access for students who want to serve on the council but cannot afford to dedicate their time to USAC.
