An average day for fourth-year student Eliott Ephrati might include practicing the violin for hours to prepare for a recital, writing and directing a short movie, coding a microchip to get data from a brain sensor, or designing a next generation computer mouse.

Ephrati, the only student double majoring in violin performance and Design | Media Arts, is graduating in a week to attend Harvard Graduate School of Design. Though he came into UCLA with the intention of pursuing a career in music, his hidden passion for design surfaced after he arrived at UCLA.

Fourth-year Design | Media Arts student Alejandro Bustamante, fourth-year doctoral student in violin performance Ambroise Aubrun, and UCLA violin instructor Guillaume Sutre share Ephrati’s academic journey and discuss how his musical background can affect his design work in the future.
