Four Bruins taken in Day Three of MLB Draft

After three Bruins were taken in the MLB Draft on Friday, four more UCLA baseball players have heard their names called today.

Junior pitcher Adam Plutko, who many expected to be the Bruin’s top prospect, went undrafted on Friday but didn’t have to wait long today for his turn. Plutko was taken by the Cleveland Indians in the 11th round with the 321st pick overall. Plutko (8-3, 2.51 ERA) became UCLA’s all-time postseason wins leader last week and pitched seven innings and allowed only one run in game one of UCLA’s Super Regional matchup against Cal State Fullerton last night.

Junior outfielder Brenton Allen was selected by the Washington Nationals in the 20th round with the 616th overall pick. Allen, who has played in 38 of UCLA’s 60 games, is batting .247 with two home runs on the year.

The Miami Marlins drafted junior infielder Kevin Williams 862nd overall in the 29th round. After playing in 55 games and hitting .302 last season, Williams’ numbers dropped this season – he played in 36 games and hit .231.

Redshirt junior pitcher Ryan Deeter was taken in the 32nd round with the 962nd pick by the Milwaukee Brewers. Deeter had 21 relief appearances this season, posting a 4.24 ERA and a 2-0 record. Deeter posted a 0.89 ERA last season in 36 appearances, but with the emergence of several young relievers, has had fewer opportunities this season.

As the 40th and final round of the draft approaches, UCLA’s remaining upperclassmen continue to wait for their names to be called.
