One of the things that sets the UC system and UCLA in particular, apart from other universities around the country is the commitment that Bruins have to social justice, social equality and activism. As a parent (and social worker) who has spent the last year helping my child evaluate colleges for the best “fit”, I found it very interesting (and sad) that the this sense of social obligation is unique. One feels it as they simply walk around campus at UCLA. At that other school across town, visitors can’t help but hear the phrase, “Fight on” as students greet one another. Just what they’re fighting for or against is unclear! At UCLA the passion for “fighting” for social justice is self-evident in the numerous clubs and organizations dedicated to reaching out not just to L.A. but the world beyond.
Thank you, young Bruins, for being the compassionate, hard-working kids you are!
I’m so proud that my son will be joining you in the fall!
