This board endorses Jessica Kim for Campus Events commissioner because she possesses a deep knowledge of her office, experience and innovative ideas.
Kim’s platforms encompass the needs of diverse students and groups on campus. In addition to continuing to co-program with other offices and student groups, Kim wants to teach other groups how to put on programs themselves.
She plans to do this by holding office hours, during which students can come in and inquire how to best go about putting on their own events. Becoming a resource for holding events, rather than just co-programming, is an inventive platform.
But we encourage Kim to consider reaching out to students herself rather than expecting them to come to her. She can do so by hosting workshops and providing online resources to help students learn more event planning.
Another of her platforms is to include more events for international students, including screening of Academy Award-nominated foreign films in the fall. The board thinks this is a good opportunity to diversify CEC’s range of events.
Kim also has extensive experience on CEC, including being this year’s external affairs coordinator and director of film festivals.
In addition to running the Campus Events Commission, Kim will be a sitting member of council. Kim’s work on USAC has not extended much beyond CEC, and she knows that she has much to learn about voting on important campus issues. But she has already put thought into how she would use her assets as commissioner to make informed decisions.
Kim not only knows how to continue the commission’s already successful programs, but she has devised original platforms that will make them even better.
Correction: The name of the Campus Events Commission was incorrect in one instance.
