A man reportedly broke into a dorm room in Hitch Suites through an unlocked window early Monday morning while the room’s residents were sleeping, according to university police.
No items were taken from the room and no one was hurt, according to a university police report released Tuesday.
Nancy Jimenez, a first-year undeclared student, said she heard some noises in her first-floor suite at 4:30 a.m. She said she dismissed the noises at first, thinking it was one of her roommates. But when she heard someone rustling through her own belongings she said she got suspicious.
After she moved, the man flashed a light in her face, Jimenez said. She then turned and saw the man standing in the corner of the room, possibly trying to hide. As Jimenez started to climb down from her top bunk, he left the room through an open window, she said.
The man from Monday’s reported incident was described in the police report as 5 feet 5 inches to 5 feet 7 inches tall and was wearing red Converse shoes at the time of the event.
A similar incident was reported in 2011, when a man entered an unoccupied room in Hedrick Summit through a window but was discovered by a student in an adjoining suite, according to Daily Bruin archives.
Police recommend that students should not leave doors or windows open or unlocked at night, and should not open doors for strangers.
