Even with big end-of-season matches looming, the women’s tennis team is focused on staying competitive and vigorous day in and day out – a mindset they will put to use when they travel to Eugene, Ore., to compete against Oregon today.
“It’s always a challenge to not look ahead. I think for us, our focus should just be one game at a time,” said sophomore Kaitlin Ray. “If you only get up for the big matches, or if you only think you have to bring your best for big matches, then you run the risk of becoming complacent when you face teams that you feel like are not as good. … The preparation should always be the same.”
Both Ray and coach Stella Sampras Webster said they hope that this match against the Ducks will be a time to work out the kinks in their doubles play, which they have struggled in recently, as well as allow some players to gain some needed playing time before NCAAs.
“We’re just using all this time to prepare us for the challenge ahead. … We’re doing everything to prepare us for the NCAAs,” said Sampras Webster.
Despite the fact that the team is treating the coming weeks as a time for preparation, sophomore Robin Anderson said she was doubtful that injured players would be able to rest too much.
“I don’t think too many people (will be resting). I wish I could say so. But players who need more matches, like (sophomore) Skylar (Morton), will get to play,” Anderson said.
Anderson herself will likely be resting after injuring her shoulder during the weekend matches against Cal and Stanford two weeks ago.
Besides featuring lesser-known players, the match will also provide a unique dynamic in that it may be one of the few times the Bruins will compete indoors all year, depending on the weather in Eugene.
Ultimately, regardless of the circumstances, lineup or location of the match, Ray said the Bruins are looking to approach the coming weeks with a consistent attitude.
“You have to have respect for the game and respect for your opponent. That means preparing for Oregon like preparing for USC,” Ray said.
