SAN FRANCISCO— The University of California Board of Regents on Wednesday approved a $104.7 million budget to help construct a new teaching center at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA.
The new center aims to better accommodate student learning at the David Geffen School of Medicine with modern instructional space, according to Daily Bruin archives.
The building, named the Teaching and Learning Center for Health Sciences, will be funded through two main sources: $55.7 million from UCLA hospital reserves and $49 million in interim financing, a type of short-term loan that will be converted to a finalized long-term loan, according to a report from the UC Office of the President.
The regents approved initial funding for the project at its meeting in September.
The center will house facilities for additional academic programs at the David Geffen School of Medicine. It will be located near the intersection of Le Conte Avenue and Tiverton Drive and is expected to take up 120,000 square feet, including 110,000 devoted to a medical education building that will house classrooms, as well as laboratories, learning spaces and administrative offices and is planned to be completed by August 2016, according to the report.
The university plans to turn the rest of the space into an enclosed access drive to existing parking lots, according to the report.
