Breaking: Obama re-elected to a second term

[Updated: President Barack Obama won a second term as president of the United States on Tuesday, defeating Republican candidate Mitt Romney, according to the Associated Press.]

Obama led Romney at 8:30 p.m. PST with 274 electoral votes, according to CNN.

Obama won 18 electoral votes in the battleground state of Ohio, according to major media outlets.

Polls leading up to the election showed a head-to-head race, with Romney and Obama tied at 49 percent of the popular vote.

The president will be sworn in again on Jan. 20, 2013.
