Football Monday

Offense Report

The Good: Coming off a sloppy game in a losing effort against Cal in which the Bruin offense racked up five turnovers, it didn’t concede a single one against the Utes. UCLA took care of the football, not handing Utah any extra possessions. Redshirt freshman quarterback Brett Hundley also rediscovered his scrambling ability, carrying the ball 15 times and picking up crucial first downs along the way.

The Bad: Not much. The Bruins put up 354 yards of total offense ““ much less than their usual, but were still efficient.

The Verdict: The UCLA offense found a way to grind out the game and get a victory. Hundley flashed his dual-threat potential going 15 of 21 passing and 68 yards rushing. He hasn’t shown this much mobility and quick decision making since his first game against Rice.

Defense Report

The Good: The defensive line hurried up the Utah quarterback, a true freshman, into tough situations and was able to keep contain on a very shifty, quick running back in John White, who only had 44 yards on the ground.

The Bad: A late touchdown was given up with a little more than three minutes to play in the game, putting the Utes within a score of tying up the game and a two-point conversion from winning. Mora said after the game he was disappointed in ending the game on a bad note.

The Verdict: The longest carry for the Utes was 9 yards by White and the entire team was held to 75 yards on the ground.

Sights & Sounds

““ The Blue Man Group performed the national anthem and interacted with the student section throughout the game.

““ Marching band alumni performed with the current marching band at halftime.

Bruin Reaction

“Today he made a major step, in my mind, in terms of demonstrating his mobility as a quarterback. All of us at practice have seen that a lot. He tucked it and ran when he saw an opportunity to do that. That will make him more of a threat to do that. Having a defensive background, it’s tough when you have to defend throwing the ball and running the ball himself. It’s got to be appropriate. He did it at the right times.”
